Church History: Building St Joseph's
The Jesuits are a religious group within the Catholic Church. They came to Roehampton in the mid-1800s. They set up a special training house called Manresa House. This building later became Whitelands College, which is now part of the University of Roehampton.
In 1869, the Jesuits began helping local Catholic families. They wanted a permanent place for people to worship. So, in 1881, they decided to build a church. They asked Frederick Walters to design it. This was the first church he designed for the Jesuits. He went on to design other buildings for them, like Sacred Heart Church, Wimbledon.
Changes Over Time
In 1948, the Jesuits moved their training house to a new location. They also gave the responsibility for St Joseph's Church to the Diocese of Southwark. This group still manages the church today.
The church building has been updated over the years. In 1958, it was made larger with an extension. Then, in 1998, the inside of the church was changed and improved.
