The Story of St Joseph's Church
How the Church Began
The Jesuits, a group of Catholic priests, came to Roehampton in the mid-1800s. They set up a special training house called Manresa House. This building later became Whitelands College, which is now part of the University of Roehampton.
In 1869, the Jesuits started a mission to help the local Catholic community. They wanted a permanent place for people to worship. So, in 1881, they decided to build a church. They asked Frederick Walters to design it. This was the very first church he designed for the Jesuits. He went on to design many more buildings for them, including Sacred Heart Church, Wimbledon and the chapel at Wimbledon College.
Changes Over Time
In 1948, the Jesuits moved their training house from Manresa House to a new location. They also handed over the care of St Joseph's Church to the Diocese of Southwark. This diocese still looks after the church and its community today.
The church building itself has also changed over the years. In 1958, it was made bigger with an extension. Later, in 1998, the inside of the church was rearranged and updated.
