St Joseph's Church is a Roman Catholic church located in Roehampton, a part of the London Borough of Wandsworth. It was started by a group called the Jesuits in 1869. The church was designed by an architect named Frederick Walters. You can find it at the corner of Roehampton Lane and Medfield Street.

Church History: Building St Joseph's

The Jesuits are a religious group within the Catholic Church. They came to Roehampton in the mid-1800s. They set up a special training house called Manresa House. This building later became Whitelands College, which is now part of the University of Roehampton.

In 1869, the Jesuits began helping local Catholic families. They wanted a permanent place for people to worship. So, in 1881, they decided to build a church. They asked Frederick Walters to design it. This was the first church he designed for the Jesuits. He went on to design other buildings for them, like Sacred Heart Church, Wimbledon.

Changes Over Time

In 1948, the Jesuits moved their training house to a new location. They also gave the responsibility for St Joseph's Church to the Diocese of Southwark. This group still manages the church today.

The church building has been updated over the years. In 1958, it was made larger with an extension. Then, in 1998, the inside of the church was changed and improved.

Parish Life: What Happens at St Joseph's

St Joseph's Church holds several services each week. On Saturdays, there is an evening Mass at 6:00 PM. On Sundays, there are Masses at 9:00 AM, 11:00 AM, and 6:00 PM. Weekday Masses are held on Monday, Tuesday, and Saturday mornings at 10:00 AM, and on Friday mornings at 8:00 AM.

A primary school called Sacred Heart Primary School is also part of the church's community. It was started by another religious group, the Society of the Sacred Heart.
