St Katherine Westway is a Church of England parish church located in Hammersmith, west London. A parish church serves a specific local area. This church has an interesting history, including being rebuilt after a war. It stands next to a major road called Westway.
The First Church: How It Began
The first church building was originally named St Catherine Coleman. It got this name because money from selling an older church, also called St Katherine Coleman, helped pay for its construction.
This first church was built in 1922. It was designed by an architect named Robert Atkinson. By 1929, it was given its own parish, meaning it became the main church for that local community.
A New Start After the War
Sadly, the original St Katherine Westway church was destroyed during World War II. It was hit by bombs on September 14, 1940.
After the war, people worked to rebuild the church. The first stone for the new building was laid on October 25, 1958. This marked the beginning of the church you see today.
