What is the History of St Lawrence’s Church?

The porch of St Lawrence’s Church was built a very long time ago, in the 12th century. This means it is over 800 years old! Most of the church you see today was built later, during the 14th and 15th centuries.

When Was the Church Restored?

The church underwent a big restoration project in 1880. Two architects from London, Richard Herbert Carpenter and Benjamin Ingelow, led the work. A local company, Rollinson of Saltergate, Chesterfield, did the building work.

During this restoration, many parts of the church were updated:

  • The outside walls of the Lady Chapel were repaired.
  • The beautiful stone patterns (called tracery) in the East window were replaced.
  • The floors in the main part of the church (the nave) were lowered and relaid with new stone.
  • The chancel, a special area near the altar, got new decorative tiles.
  • All the old seating was replaced with new oak pews.

The church officially reopened on December 13, 1880. The Bishop of Lichfield attended the ceremony. A new stained glass window was also added in the east of the chancel. It was made by a company called Clayton and Bell to remember the Rector’s wife.

What Special Artworks Does the Church Have?

St Lawrence’s Church is famous for three special stone carvings, called reliefs, from the 14th century. These artworks show important religious scenes:

  • One shows the Martyrdom of St Lawrence. This is at the east end of the south aisle.
  • Another is the Annunciation, which is located in the Vestry.
  • The third carving shows Christ in Majesty with the Virgin Mary and Angels.

Does St Lawrence’s Church Have an Organ?
