St Lawrence's Church, Whitwell is a very old and important church located in Whitwell, Derbyshire. It is a parish church that belongs to the Church of England. This church is extra special because it is a Grade I listed building, meaning it's one of the most important historical buildings in England and is carefully protected.

The Church's Long History
This church has been standing for a very long time! It was first built in the 12th century, which means sometime in the 1100s. Over the years, parts of it were added in the 13th and 14th centuries.
Big Changes in the 1800s
The church got a major update between 1885 and 1886. A famous architect named John Loughborough Pearson led this work. He added a brand new roof made of pitch pine wood. The old stone walls were fixed up, and the inside walls were made smooth again.
Many changes happened inside too. An old gallery at the west end of the church was taken out. The old box-shaped pews (seats) were replaced with new, open seats also made of pitch pine. The floor was covered with wooden blocks, and a new heating system was put in by a company called Bacon and Co from London.
