A Look Back: History of St Madoc's Church
St Madoc's Church has a long and interesting past. It is believed that the church might have been connected to Usk Priory in the 1100s. However, the oldest parts of the church we can see today date back to the 1300s.
Key Features and Changes Over Time
The earliest part of the church that can be dated is the reredos, which is a decorated screen behind the altar. The main part of the church, called the nave, and the area around the altar, known as the chancel, might be from the same time.
The church's tower and the large window in the nave were added in the 1400s. The roof of the nave was likely rebuilt in the early 1700s. This was probably after a very big storm in 1703 caused damage.
Important Restorations and People
In the 1800s, the church got a big makeover. A famous architect named John Prichard was in charge of this work. He almost completely rebuilt the inside of the church.
The bells in the church tower are also very old. An author and artist from Monmouthshire, Fred Hando, wrote that one bell was made in 1635 and the other in 1677. A very famous scientist, Alfred Russel Wallace, was baptized at this church in 1823. He is known for his work on evolution.
