A Look Back: Church History
This church might be as old as the 1200s! That's a very long time ago. On the east wall, there is a sundial. It has a message carved into it that says Re-edified 1648. This means the church was rebuilt or repaired in the year 1648.
Inside the church, at the west end, there is a special balcony called a gallery. An old message on this gallery tells us who built it. It says: This loft was erected at the onely charge of Sir Philp Gell, Baronett. Anno Domini 1704 by consent of the parish at a meeting in Carsington: for the use of his tenants in Hopton. This means Sir Philip Gell paid for it in 1704. He built it for the people who rented land from him in a nearby place called Hopton.
