History of St Margaret's Church
Early Beginnings and Restoration
The first church building was built way back in 1517. It was like a smaller church for people living far from the main church, SS Peter and Paul's Church in Aston. A person named John Bond paid for it. For a long time, the church might have been in bad shape. So, in 1833, people started asking for money to fix it up.
Building the New Church
A brand new church building was finished and opened in 1834. It was officially made a holy place on October 23, 1841. The Bishop of Worcester led this special ceremony.
Changes to the Parish Area
In 1870, some land was taken from the SS Peter and Paul's Church area to create a new church parish for St Margaret's. Later, in 1928, parts of St Margaret's parish were used to create the parish for St Paul's Church, Bordesley Green. The next year, in 1929, another part was used for St Mary and St John's Church, Shaw Hill.
Recent Years and Community Work
St Margaret's Church closed its doors in 2005. Its parish then joined with Christ Church, Ward End. In 2010, a group called the St Margaret's Community Trust started a project to fix up the old church building.
Important Memorials
Inside the church, there is a special memorial. It is a Gothic-style monument dedicated to William Hutton. He was a famous historian who lived from 1723 to 1815. The memorial includes a bust, which is a sculpture of his head and shoulders. This bust was made by a sculptor named Peter Hollins in 1848.
The Church Organ
An organ was put into the church in 1845. It was built by a company called J C Bishop. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register, which keeps records of organs.
