St Martin of Tours’ Church is a special building in Wolverhampton, England. It is a parish church that belongs to the Church of England. This church is also a Grade II listed building. This means it is an important historical building that needs to be protected.

Building St Martin's Church

The church was built in 1939. A talented architect named Richard Twentyman designed it. People have described the church as looking very strong and solid.

A Strong Foundation

The church was built on the site of an old mine. Because of this, its foundations needed to be extra strong. They were made of reinforced concrete and went down 12 feet deep. This helped make sure the church would stand safely for many years.

Inside the Church

The church has a main area called a nave, which is six sections long. It also has a chancel, which is a smaller area near the altar. There are low aisles on the sides, which are like walkways.

Special Art and Design

Many parts of the church were created by skilled artists and local companies.

  • The statue of St Martin on the tower was made by a sculptor named Don Potter.
  • Don Potter also designed the font, which is used for baptisms, and the pulpit, where sermons are given.
  • A local company called James Gibbons Ltd. made other important parts. These include the altar rails, door handles, grilles, and windows.
