St Mary's Catholic Church is a special building in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, England. It's a Roman Catholic church that first opened its doors in 1839. People in Uttoxeter often call it The Catholic Church so it doesn't get mixed up with another church named St Mary's in the same town. This church is part of a bigger group called the Parish of St. Mary, which also includes Sacred Heart Church in Abbots Bromley.
History of the Church
Who Designed It?
A famous architect named Augustus Pugin designed St Mary's Catholic Church. This was actually the very first church he ever designed!
Building the Church
Work on the church began on 4 October 1838. It was finished and opened to the public less than a year later, on 22 August 1839. Father Morgan, who was part of the Cresswell mission, helped make this church happen.
Later Additions
The church has grown over the years.
- In 1879, a new part called a chancel was added. A chancel is the area around the altar, often used by the choir.
- The church was made even bigger in 1913.
- There is also a house next to the church, called a Presbytery, where the priests live. Pugin designed this building too, and it was later made larger.
