The Church's Story
How St. Mary's Was Built
The famous architect Augustus Pugin designed St Mary's Catholic Church. This was actually the very first church he ever designed! Building work began on October 4, 1838. The church was officially opened less than a year later, on August 22, 1839.
A priest named Father Morgan, who was part of the Cresswell mission, helped make the church happen.
Changes and Additions Over Time
Over the years, the church has grown bigger. In 1879, a new part called a chancel was added. A chancel is the area near the altar where the choir and clergy sit. The church was made even larger in 1913.
Next to the church, there is also a house called a Presbytery. This is where the priests live. Augustus Pugin also designed this building. It has been extended since it was first built and is connected to the side of the church.
