St Mary's Church is a special old church located in Clifton, a village in Nottinghamshire, England. It's a parish church, which means it serves the local community. History of St Mary's Church

This church is very old, dating back to the Middle Ages. Over many years, different architects helped to restore and improve it.

Restorations and Architects

In 1846, a person named Lewis Nockalls Cottingham worked on restoring the church. Later, in 1874, C. Hodgson Fowler also helped with its restoration.

Another architect, George Frederick Bodley, worked on the church in 1884. More recently, between 1969 and 1979, George Pace and Ronald Sims carried out further important work.

St Mary's Church has some beautiful and unique features inside.

The Reredos and Decorations

One special feature is the reredos, which is a decorated screen behind the altar. This reredos used to be at Kelham College. Many of the church's decorations were designed by George Frederick Bodley.

The Church Organ

The church has a wonderful organ that makes beautiful music.

About the Organ

The organ was built by a company called Marcussen & Søn from Denmark. It was installed in the church in 1973. At that time, the church's organist was Ian Abernethy.

The Parsonage House

Next to the church is the parsonage house, where the church's priest or minister lives.

Enlargement of the Parsonage

The parsonage house was made bigger in 1830. This work was done by Henry Moses Wood.
