History of St Mary's Church
Building the Church
The church was designed by an architect named Edwin Francis Reynolds. He drew up the plans in 1927. The actual building work happened between 1929 and 1930. A company called C. Bryant and Son built the church. It cost £20,415 to build, which was a lot of money back then! The money came from selling the land of another church, St Mary's Church, Whittall Street, Birmingham.
Protecting the Building
In October 1995, the red-brick church and its hall were given "listed status." This means they are recognized as important historical buildings. It helps make sure they are looked after and kept safe for the future.
A New Chapter: Lighthouse Church
In 2022, St Mary's Church started a new journey. It became a "church plant" from another church called Gas Street Church. This means the people who already went to St Mary's joined with a new team from Gas Street Church. Together, they formed a new church community.
This new church is called Lighthouse Church | St Mary's. They meet every Sunday morning at 10:30 AM. The doors open a bit earlier, at 10:15 AM, for people to grab some refreshments.
Activities for Kids and Teens
Lighthouse Church has special groups for young people.
- Lighthouse Kids is for children of primary school age.
- Lighthouse Youth is for teenagers of secondary school age.
These groups run every Sunday. However, on the first Sunday of each month, everyone gathers together for a "Worship For Everyone" service. You can find more up-to-date information on their social media, @lighthouseonline.church.
The Church Organ
St Mary's Church has a musical instrument called an organ. This organ was made in 1900 by a company called Nicholson and Lord. You can find detailed information about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
