Building the Church
St. Mary's Church was built in 1898. It was designed by an architect named Percy Heylyn Currey. The church was needed because the nearby mining villages were growing quickly. More people meant more places of worship were needed.
Who Helped Build It?
Building the church was a community effort. Francis Cowper, 7th Earl Cowper gave the land where the church stands. A person named James Oakes provided the money to build it. The church cost about £2,000 at that time.
Why Westwood?
Even though the church is in Jacksdale, it is called St. Mary's Church, Westwood. This is because before the church was built, people held church services in the village school in Westwood. They did this for 30 years! So, the church kept the name of the village where its services first began.
