St Mary's Church, also called St Mary the Virgin, is a very old Church of England church in Morpeth, Northumberland, England. It is a Grade I listed building, which means it is very important and protected. The church is located south of the River Wansbeck in an area of Morpeth known as High Church.
The oldest parts of the church were built in the 12th century. Most of the church you see today was built in the 14th century. For many years, until the 1840s, St Mary's was the main church for Anglican worship in the area. Over time, the church has been damaged and rebuilt many times. It was attacked by groups like the Scandinavians, Scottish, and Cromwellians in different centuries.
Who Was Emily Davison?
The graveyard at St Mary's Church is home to the grave of Emily Wilding Davison. She was a famous suffragette, a person who fought for women's right to vote. Emily Davison died in 1913 during a horse race called The Derby. She was trying to make a statement about women's rights when she was accidentally hit by the King's horse.
Her gravestone has a powerful message from the Women's Social and Political Union. This was a group that worked for women's voting rights. The message on her gravestone is: "Deeds not words". This means that actions are more important than just talking.
