The Church of St Mary, Studley Royal, is a beautiful old church in North Yorkshire, England. It was built a long time ago, between 1871 and 1878. A famous architect named William Burges designed it in a style called Gothic Revival. This church is special because it was built as a memorial to a young man named Frederick Grantham Vyner.
A Special Memorial Church
Frederick Vyner was sadly killed by bandits in 1870. A large amount of money had been collected to help him, but it was not used. His mother, Lady Mary Vyner, and his sister, Lady Ripon, decided to use this money to build two churches in his memory.
One of these churches is St Mary's. The architect, William Burges, was chosen because he was friends with Frederick Vyner's close friend from university. Work on St Mary's began in 1871, and the church was officially opened in 1878.
Amazing Design and Art
The Church of St Mary is known for its stunning design. It was built in an "Early English" style, which is a type of Gothic Revival architecture. People often describe it as a "Victorian shrine" because it looks so grand and beautiful.
The inside of the church is truly spectacular. It has rich decorations and a majestic feel. The stained-glass windows are especially wonderful, with very fine details and colors. William Burges worked with many talented artists to create the church. The sculptures were made by Thomas Nicholls. The beautiful stained glass was designed by Frederick Weekes and put together by Saunders & Co.
St Mary's is considered one of Burges's best church designs. It is also a Grade I Listed Building, which means it's a very important historical building that needs to be protected.
