The Church of St Mary is a special church in Chadwell St Mary, Essex, England. It's part of the Church of England and is considered a very important old building. It is known as a Grade I listed building, which means it's protected because of its history and beautiful design. This church works together with Emmanuel Church to form the Parish of Chadwell St Mary.

History of St Mary's Church

The Church of St Mary was named after the Virgin Mary. This is why "St Mary" is part of its name today. The church is located in Chadwell St Mary, overlooking the marshes.

Early Beginnings

There was a church in Chadwell even before the Norman conquest in 1066. The current church building has many features from the Norman period. This suggests it was built around the 12th century, which is over 800 years ago!

Building Changes Over Time

The church's tower was added much later, in the early 16th century. Inside the church, you can find an old memorial made of brass. It remembers Cicilye Owen, who passed away in 1603. In the early 1900s, a new part was added to the south side of the church.

St Mary's Today

On February 8, 1960, St Mary's Church was officially recognized as a Grade I listed building. This is the highest level of protection for historic buildings in England. The church follows the Evangelical tradition within the Church of England. It also welcomes the ordination of women as priests.

Memorials and Gravestones

The churchyard of St Mary's holds several interesting memorials and gravestones.

War Memorials

On the north side of the church, there is a special war memorial. It honors eight people from Chadwell who died in World War I. In 2006, five more names were added to this memorial. These new names were for those who died in World War II.

Elizabeth Manning's Gravestone

Near the church, you can find the gravestone of Elizabeth Manning. She passed away in 1805. After she died, there was a disagreement about her will. This led to a very important legal decision that has been used as an example many times since then.

Japanese Naval Officer's Memorial

Among the other stones in the churchyard, there is a memorial for Kadzuo Yamazaki. He was a 22-year-old Japanese naval officer. He died on July 13, 1899, in a fire on a ship called the SS Kawachi Maru. The ship was in Tilbury docks at the time. His gravestone has writing in both English and Japanese.
