A Look Back in Time
How Old is the Church?
People believe there was a church in Holcot as far back as 1086. This is because the Domesday Book mentions a priest living there. The Domesday Book was a very old survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror. It helped him know what was in his new kingdom. Even though it mentioned a priest, it didn't specifically say there was a church building at that time.
Building Through the Centuries
The main parts of the church you see today were built a very long time ago. They were put up in the 13th and 14th centuries. That means the church is hundreds of years old! Over time, the church has been repaired and updated. Big restoration projects happened in 1845 and again in 1889.
What the Church Looks Like
The church has several important parts. It has a nave, which is the main area where people sit. On either side of the nave are the north and south aisles. These are like hallways running along the sides. At the front, there is a chancel. This is the part of the church where the altar is located. Finally, there is a tall west tower at one end of the building.
Records of the Past
The church has kept records of important events for a very long time. These records are called parish registers. They go all the way back to 1559. These old registers are now kept safely at the Northamptonshire Record Office. They help us learn about the history of the people in Holcot.
Working Together
St Mary & All Saints' Church in Holcot works closely with Brixworth. They are part of a group called a "united Benefice." Even though they work together, each church still has its own building and serves its own local community.
