What is the History of St Michael's Church?
This church has been around for a very long time! It was first built in the 1100s. Over the years, parts of it were changed and added, especially in the 1300s and 1400s.
How Did the Church Change Over Time?
In 1821, the church became smaller. Two architects, JB and W Atkinson, worked on this change. They finished the work in 1822.
Later, between 1966 and 1967, the church's tower was made shorter. In 1984, the church stopped being used for regular worship. It closed its doors as a church.
However, the building found a new purpose! In 1989, it re-opened as a restaurant and cafe. Even though it's now a place to eat, a small chapel upstairs is still sometimes used for church services.
What About the Church's Clock?
On the outside of the church, on the south wall, you can see a painted clock face. The clock's inner workings were rebuilt in 1896 by G. J. F. Newey.
The clock used to be inside the church tower. But after the tower was made shorter in 1966, the clock was moved to where it is today.
