The Church of St Michael is a historic church located in Buckland Dinham, a village in Somerset, England. This church is very special because it has been named a Grade I listed building. This means it's a super important building with a lot of history that needs to be protected for the future.

A Look at the Church's History

The Church of St Michael has been around for a very long time. Parts of the church, like the main area (called the nave), the altar area (called the chancel), a small south chapel, and the south entrance porch, were built way back in the year 1200.

How the Church Grew Over Time

Over the years, more parts were added to the church.

  • In 1325, a north chapel was built.
  • Later, in 1480, another chapel was added north of the chancel.
  • The tall tower at the west end of the church was also added around 1480.

The church has been kept in good shape over the centuries. It had a big update and repair project in the late 1800s to make sure it stayed strong and beautiful.

The Church Bells

The tower of St Michael's Church holds six bells. These bells are very old, but they weren't rung for a long time. From the 1950s until the 1990s, the bells were silent.

Bringing the Bells Back to Life

A special project was started in the 1990s to fix and restore the bells. As part of this project, a new bell was even brought in from St Paul's Church, Bristol to join the others. Now, the bells can ring out again, calling people to worship and marking special occasions.

The Church Community

The Church of St Michael is an Anglican church. It is part of a larger group of churches in the area. This group includes churches from Mells, Elm, Whatley, and Chantry. They all work together as part of the wider church family in the Wells area.
