History of St Michael's Church
The church building you see today was mostly built around 1761. At first, it was a private chapel for a nearby house called Holbrook Hall. In 1835, it became the official parish church for the village. This means it was set aside for public worship.
Changes Over the Years
The church has been changed and rebuilt several times:
- In 1842, a builder named W. Evans from Allstree rebuilt parts of the church.
- In 1887, the church got new seats. This work was done by Mr Thompson of Derby for Sir William Evans, 1st Baronet. The Bishop of Southwell officially reopened the church on December 1, 1887.
The Great Fire of 1907
On January 27, 1907, a big fire broke out in the church. It was caused by a problem with the chimney. After the fire, the church had to be rebuilt.
- Architects Naylor and Sale from Derby took on the job.
- They added a new section on the south side, which created space for 75 more people.
- Before the fire, the church didn't have a chancel (the part of the church near the altar). The rebuild added a chancel.
- The new chancel had beautiful marble and Hopton stone floors.
- The wood carvings in the chancel were made by R. Bridgman of Lichfield.
- The altar was made by Wippell and Co of London, and the altar cloths were made by Hawes and Son of Norwich.
The church was ready and reopened on April 15, 1908.
Later Restoration
The church was closed for a few weeks in 1929 for more repairs and improvements.
