The Bishop of Southwell and Nottingham is a very important leader in the Church of England. This person is the main bishop for the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham. A diocese is like a special area or region that a bishop looks after. This diocese is part of the larger Province of York in England.
The diocese covers a large area, about 847 square miles (2,194 square kilometers). This includes all of Nottinghamshire and a small part of South Yorkshire. The main church, called the Cathedral and Collegiate Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary (or just Southwell Minster), is in the town of Southwell. This church became a cathedral in 1884. The bishop lives nearby at Bishop's Manor, Southwell.
The Diocese of Southwell was created in 1884. In 2005, the name was changed to "Southwell and Nottingham" to include the city of Nottingham. The current bishop is Paul Williams. He became bishop on May 11, 2015. There are 314 church buildings in this diocese.
