St Michael and All Angels’ Church is an old church in Appleby Magna, Leicestershire, England. It is part of the Church of England. This church is considered a very important historical building, known as a Grade II* listed site.

History of the Church

This church was built around the year 1300. Most of what you see today was built in the 1300s. A special part of the church, called St. Helen's Chapel, was added to the north-east side. This chapel was used by the de Appleby family for private prayers and as a burial place.

Most of the old tombs are gone now. But you can still see two beautiful stone statues, called effigies. These statues show Sir Edmund de Appleby and his wife Joan. They were made in 1375. The chapel is now known as the de Appleby Chapel. Today, it is used as the church's vestry, which is a room where clergy prepare for services.

The church was also repaired and updated in 1827.

Church Music: The Organ

The church has a special musical instrument called a pipe organ. It was built in 1964 by W Hawkins and Son. This organ has two keyboards for the hands and pedals for the feet. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.

Past Organists

Some of the people who played the organ at the church include:

  • William Riley, who played from 1863 to 1895.
  • Another William Riley (likely his son or a relative) played from 1898 to 1931.

The Church Bells

The church has a set of six bells that can be rung together. These bells were made at different times. Some are very old, dating back to 1619 and 1769. Other bells were added later, in 1911 and 1982.
