The Story of St Nicholas Church
How Old is the Church?
The very first church building here was likely made of wood. It was built in 1511. Later, in 1561, during the time of Queen Elizabeth I, a new church made of stone replaced the wooden one.
Building the Current Church
The church building you see today was finished in 1825. You can even see this date above the west door. What's really interesting is that the local people, called parishioners, are thought to have built it themselves. They didn't even have a professional architect helping them!
Later, in 1897, a part of the church called the chancel was added by R.B. Preston. The chancel is the area near the altar, usually at the east end of the church.
What is a Listed Building?
St Nicholas Church is a Grade II* listed building. This means it's a very important historic building. It has special protection to make sure it is kept safe and preserved for the future.
The Church Today
Today, the church is known as St Nicholas, Newchurch with St John and St Michael. This is because it is part of a larger group of churches. Two other churches, St Michael's in Lumb (built 1848) and St John's in Cloughfold (built 1890), are also part of this group.
