History of St Nicholas Church
The very first church building here was likely made of wood. It was built around the year 1511. Later, in 1561, during the time of Queen Elizabeth I, a new church was constructed using stone.
The Current Building
The church building you see today was completed in 1825. It's quite special because people believe the local community built it themselves. They didn't even have a professional architect helping them! A part of the church called the chancel was added later in 1897 by R.B Preston.
Special Status of the Church
St Nicholas Church is recognized as a Grade II* listed building. This means it's a very important historical building. It has special protection to make sure it is preserved for the future.
St Nicholas Parish Today
Today, the church parish is known as "St Nicholas, Newchurch with St John and St Michael." This name includes other churches in the area. St. Michael's Church was built in Lumb in 1848. St. John's Church was built in Cloughfold in 1890.
