History of St Paul's Church
Building the Church
The church was built in 1845. It cost about £2,840, which was a lot of money back then! A kind person named William Tweedy paid for it without asking for interest on the money.
The church first opened its doors for people to worship on 23 November 1845. However, it still had some debts. Because of this, the bishop would not officially dedicate it.
Clearing the Debt and Consecration
It took 20 years for the church community to pay off all the money they owed. They also had to set up a fund to pay the vicar (the church leader). The community raised £1,100, and the church commissioners added another £1,000. This money was invested to provide a yearly payment for the vicar.
Finally, the church was officially dedicated on 26 November 1864. This important ceremony was led by the Bishop of Exeter, Henry Phillpotts. After this, St Paul's Church became its own official parish, meaning it had its own local area to serve.
Making the Church Bigger
By 1880, more and more people were coming to the church. It was becoming too small for everyone! So, a group was formed to make the church larger. They planned to add a new part called a chancel, and two side sections called north and south aisles.
They hired a famous architect named John Dando Sedding to design the new parts. The new chancel was built by Mr. W Bone of Liskeard and cost £3,000. It was officially dedicated on 7 January 1884.
The north aisle was added a few years later in 1889. The church reopened with its new additions on 27 June 1889. The church's tower was finished much later in 1910 by Edmund Harold Sedding.
Stained Glass and Closure
St Paul's Church is well-known for its beautiful stained glass windows. These were designed by a company called Lavers, Barraud and Westlake.
Sadly, the church closed in 2007. A survey found that the building had serious problems. It would have cost about £1,000,000 to fix everything. Because of this huge cost, the church community decided to move to a different place.
Church Organ
The church had a musical organ made by a company called Hele and Co. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
