History of St Paul's Church

How the Church Began

St Paul's Church started as a "mission church" in 1911. This means it was a smaller church set up by a bigger one, St Margaret's Church, Ward End, to help a new community. It was built for the "Ideal Village" that was being created in Bordesley Green.

The first building, made of red bricks, was finished in 1913. It officially became a church in 1929.

The New Church Building

In 1969, a much larger church was built on the same spot. It was designed by an architect named John P Osborne. This new building was made to be very useful and modern.

In 1999, the church was changed again to become a "multi-purpose" building. This means it's used for church services and also as a Conference Centre. It has meeting rooms and offices too. The building has a unique low, flat roof made of copper felt. Its shape is like a trapezoid, getting narrower from west to east.

Beautiful Stained Glass

The church has lovely stained glass windows created by Margaret Trehearne. The chapel inside the church gets beautiful light from its red and blue stained glass.

Community Work

The original mission church building was updated in 1993. It now holds a special Day Nursery that has been rated "Outstanding." This nursery helps families in the local area.

There's also a charity called Crossover that works from 619 Bordesley Green. This charity runs a Resource Centre that helps the community. They support people who are looking for jobs and work on many other projects to improve well-being.

The Church Organ

Before the church was changed in 1999, it had an organ. This organ was removed during the updates. A famous musician named Roger Jones, who leads Christian Music Ministries (CMM), used to play the organ there when he was younger.
