St Paul's Church is an old building in Newport, South Wales. It is a Grade II listed building, which means it is an important historical place. The church was built in a Gothic style between 1835 and 1836.
For many years, it was a church for the local community, part of the Church in Wales. In 2016, the people who went to church there moved to a new place. The building became empty and was sold in 2018.
History of St Paul's Church
St Paul's Church was built from 1835 to 1836. It cost about £5,000 to build, and with other things inside, it cost over £7,000 in total. The land for the church was given by Sir Charles Morgan, 2nd Baronet. His family also helped the church a lot.
The church was built to hold 1000 people. It was the first church in the town of Newport. In 1839, it became a parish church, serving the local area. A hall for the church was added in 1879. The church closed for a short time in 1991. After it reopened, the hall was updated and could be joined with the main church area. This made a large space that could hold 300 people.
On May 2, 1980, St Paul's was officially named a Grade II listed building. This means it is a special building that needs to be protected because of its history. In 2016, the church community moved to a different building. Later, they joined with another church called St Stephen's. St Paul's Church was left empty and was sold in 2018.
In December 2021, someone wanted to change the inside of the church into 20 flats. But this idea was not approved in February 2022. Groups like the Georgian Group and the Victorian Society did not want the church to be changed.
The Church Building
The design of St Paul's Church is often said to be by Thomas Henry Wyatt. However, some old records only mention "Mr Wyatt." Another history book says the architect was Sir Matthew Digby Wyatt.
The church is made of rough stone with smooth stone details. It is built in a style called Georgian Early English Gothic. This style was popular before the more famous Victorian Gothic style. At the front of the church, facing Commercial Street, there is a tall, eight-sided clock tower with a pointed top.
The ceiling of the church was added in 1842. The building was updated in 1859 by G. Clarke. Later, in 1888, it was redecorated with new entrances by Habershon and Fawckner.
Stained Glass Windows
The church has beautiful stained glass windows. These windows show pictures from the Bible, including:
- Christ the Good Shepherd
- The Good Samaritan
- Christ Blessing Children
