The History of St Peter's Church

Building a New Church

The original church building was very old and was taken down. A brand new church was then built in 1812. This new building cost about £2,000, which was a huge amount of money back then! The person who designed it was an architect named Henry Moses Wood.

Changes and Improvements

Later, in 1871 and 1872, a part of the church called the chancel was rebuilt. The chancel is the area around the altar where the clergy and choir sit. This work was designed by architect Richard Charles Sutton. It cost £1,340.

The new chancel also got a beautiful stained glass window. This window shows the crucifixion and was made by Heaton, Butler and Bayne. It was put in to remember a person named Mr. J. Sherwin Gregory. The new chancel was officially opened on April 25, 1872, by Bishop Henry Mackenzie.

People Who Led the Church

Over many centuries, many different priests and vicars have led St Peter's Church. Some of the earliest leaders were Silvester around 1200 and Radalphus Clericus in 1223. More recently, people like David Edinborough have served the church since 2002.

The Church Organ

A New Organ for Music

In 1869, a brand new organ was put into St Peter's Church. This organ was made by a company called Messrs Bevington and Son. It was first played on March 21, 1869, by W. T. Cockrem, who was an organist from another church.

Today's Organ

Today, the church has a different organ. It is a pipe organ with two keyboards, made by William Andrews. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register website.

Organists of the Church

An organist is the person who plays the organ during church services. Over the years, St Peter's Church has had several organists. Some of them include D. W. Cartwright around 1870, Thomas E. Daws, and Arthur Richards. William Henry Hotching was the organist for a very long time, from 1914 to 1949.
