A Look Back in Time
How Old Is the Church?
When people looked at the old Domesday Book, which was like a big survey from 1086, they didn't find any mention of a church or a priest in Watford. This suggests the church building we see today was built later.
Most of the church you see now was built a very long time ago, in the 1300s and 1400s. More work was done on it in the 1700s and 1800s.
What Does the Church Look Like?
The church has several main parts. It has a central area called the nave. On either side of the nave are the north and south aisles. There's also a chancel, which is the part of the church where the altar is. Next to the chancel is a north chapel.
The church also has two entrances, called porches, on the north and south sides. At the very end of the church, there's a tall west tower. You can find a lot more details about the church's design on the Historic England website.
Church Records and Community
Old Church Records
The church has kept very old records, called parish registers, since the year 1565. These registers are like old notebooks that recorded important events. They include things like births, marriages, and deaths that happened in the village. These historic records are now kept safely at the Northamptonshire Record Office. They help us learn about the past lives of people in Watford.
Working Together with Other Churches
St Peter & St Paul's Church is part of a group of churches called a "united Benefice." This means it works closely with churches in nearby villages. These villages include Long Buckby, West Haddon, and Winwick. Even though they work together, each village still has its own church building.
