A Look at the Church's History
The very first church on this spot was built a long time ago, in the 11th century. That's over 900 years ago!
Changes Over Time
- In 1643, during the English Civil War, the church was damaged.
- Between 1776 and 1781, the old church was replaced with a new one.
- About 100 years later, in 1870, the church needed to be bigger. So, the church you see today was built. Sir Arthur Blomfield was the architect who designed it.
- In 1884, George Frederick Bodley added beautiful decorations to the chancel area.
- The south aisle, which is a side section of the church, was added in 1914. Temple Lushington Moore designed it, and Alfred Shuttleworth paid for it. A special screen called a Rood Screen was also added then.
- In 1993, the north aisle was changed to create a meeting room. It is called the Louisa Smith meeting room.
