St. Stephen's Church, Bunker's Hill was a Church of England church in Nottingham. It was also known as Trinity Free Church. This church was active from 1859 to 1896.
The Church's Story
St. Stephen's Church started as Trinity Free Church. It was built in 1859 as a smaller church connected to Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Square. This type of church is called a chapel of ease. It was meant to make it easier for people to attend church.
By 1868, the church wanted to become independent. It was made bigger by an architect named Thomas Chambers Hine. On November 26, 1868, the new church was officially opened. Bishop John Jackson of Lincoln led the special ceremony. The church was then named St. Stephen's, Bunker's Hill.
The Organ
The church had an organ that was later moved. It went to St. Stephen's Church in Hyson Green.
Organ Players
- E.T. Evans was an organist at the church starting in 1889.
Why the Church Closed
St. Stephen's Church was taken down in 1896. This happened because the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway company needed the land. They wanted to build a new train station called Nottingham Victoria railway station.
The railway company paid £10,000 for the church and its land. This money was used to help build a brand new church. This new church was also called St. Stephen's Church, Hyson Green. Many items from the old church, like its fittings, were moved to the new one.
Today, the area where St. Stephen's Church once stood is covered by the Victoria Centre. This shopping centre was built after the Nottingham Victoria railway station was taken down.
