History of St Stephen's Church
Building the Church
This church was built a long time ago, between 1870 and 1871. Architects named Martin & Chamberlain designed it. They used a beautiful style called English Decorated Gothic. St Stephen's started as a 'daughter church' of St Mary's Church, Selly Oak. This means it was a new church created from an older, bigger one. It was officially opened and blessed on August 18, 1871.
Becoming Its Own Parish
In 1892, St Stephen's became its own 'parish.' A parish is like a local area that a church serves. Later, St Stephen's joined with St Wulstan's Church to form one larger parish. Also, a part of St Stephen's, called the Church Centre, became its own separate church, Christ Church, in 2004.
Church Beliefs and Traditions
St Stephen's Church follows a specific set of beliefs within the Church of England. This is called the Conservative Evangelical tradition. This tradition means they hold strong, traditional views on the Bible and Christian teachings. The church has also made decisions that show it does not support the idea of women becoming priests or bishops.
Church Organ
The first organ in the church was built by Henry Jones. It was first played in 1875. You can find details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
Church Bells
The church has one bell that weighs about 5 hundredweight (which is about 250 kilograms). This bell was made by Barwell in 1870 and is used for chiming.
