History of St Stephen's Church
How the Church Began
People in Woodville first talked about wanting a church in 1843. They had a meeting on a day called St Stephen's Day. Because of this meeting, they decided to build the church and name it after St Stephen.
Building the Church
The land for the church was a gift from Barbara Rawdon-Hastings, Marchioness of Hastings. It was about one acre in size. The church was designed by an architect named Henry Isaac Stevens.
The first stone of the church was laid on November 7, 1845. A very important person, Richard Curzon-Howe, 1st Earl Howe, helped lay this stone. Other important people were there too. The church was built with special arches in the walls. These arches were put there so the church could be made bigger later if needed. The floor in the apse (a rounded part of the church) had beautiful tiles in black, buff, and red.
When the Church Opened
The church was officially opened and blessed on December 8, 1846. This special ceremony was led by the Bishop of Peterborough, George Davys.
