History of St Stephen's Church
The idea to build a church in Woodville first came up at a meeting in 1843. This meeting happened on St Stephen's Day. Because of this, the church was named after St Stephen.
Building the Church
The land for the church was a one-acre plot. It was given by Barbara Rawdon-Hastings, Marchioness of Hastings. The church was designed by an architect named Henry Isaac Stevens.
The first stone of the church was laid on November 7, 1845. This was a special event led by Richard Curzon-Howe, 1st Earl Howe. Other important people were also there. The church was built with special arches. These arches were designed so the church could be made bigger later if needed. The floor in the apse (a rounded part of the church) was decorated with colorful tiles. These tiles were black, buff, and red.
When the Church Opened
The church was officially opened and blessed on December 8, 1846. This special ceremony was performed by Bishop George Davys from Peterborough.
Church Community
St Stephen's Church is part of a larger church community. It shares its parish with another church. That church is St Margaret's Church in Blackfordby.
