St Stephen's Church is a special building located in Borrowash, Derbyshire, England. It is a local church that belongs to the Church of England. This church serves the community of Borrowash and is a place where people gather for worship and other activities.

History of St Stephen's Church

The journey to build St Stephen's Church began a long time ago. The very first stone, called the foundation stone, was put in place on November 13, 1889. A lady named Mrs. R.L. Farmer, whose husband was a vicar at another church nearby, helped lay this important stone.

Who Designed and Built the Church?

The church was designed by a talented architect from Derby named Percy Heylyn Currey. He created the plans for the building. The church was built using a type of brick called heather brick. It was designed to hold about 200 people.

The building itself has several parts:

  • The chancel, which is the area around the altar.
  • The nave, which is the main part where people sit.
  • An organ chamber, where the organ is kept.
  • A vestry, which is a room used by the clergy.

The company that built the church was F. Slater of Derby. Many people helped make the church beautiful. For example, a special screen made of wrought iron was given by Mr. Edward H Pares. The church-yard, which is the area around the church, was designed by landscape gardeners William Barron and Son. The church officially opened its doors on September 26, 1890, with a special ceremony led by the Bishop of Southwell.

St Stephen's Church is part of a larger church community. It shares its parish with another church called All Saints' Church, Ockbrook. This means they work together to serve the people in both Borrowash and Ockbrook.

War Memorial at the Church

The church is also known for its important war memorial. This memorial is a special monument that remembers people who lost their lives in wars. It is so important that it has a special status called Grade II listed. This means it is protected because of its historical value.

Details of the War Memorial

The memorial is a type of cross called a calvary cross. The stone parts of the memorial were made by Samuel Hodgkinson, a craftsman from Borrowash. A bronze sculpture of Christ on the cross was created by Alfred Mowbray and Company from Oxford. This memorial was officially revealed in October 1920. The Bishop of Derby dedicated it in a special ceremony.

The Church Organ

When St Stephen's Church first opened, music for services was played on a harmonium. This is a musical instrument similar to a small organ. Later, in 1913, the church got its first pipe organ. This organ was bought second-hand and installed by J.H. Adkins. You can find more details about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
