History of St Stephen's Church
The church building was first built in the 14th century, which means it is over 600 years old! Over time, parts of it have been updated. For example, the church's tower was changed and improved in 1601.
Important People in the Church's Past
One important person connected to St Stephen's Church was Richard Caister. He was the Vicar (a type of priest) here from 1402 until he passed away in 1420. During his time, he was a spiritual advisor to a famous mystic named Margery Kempe. A mystic is someone who tries to connect with God in a very personal and deep way. After Richard Caister died, many people visited his burial place. It became a "pilgrimage site," which is a special place people travel to for religious reasons.
Beautiful Stained Glass Windows
Inside the church, you can find many pieces of beautiful stained glass. Stained glass windows are made from many small pieces of colored glass put together to create pictures or patterns. The glass in St Stephen's Church comes from Mariawald Abbey. This abbey is a type of monastery located near Heimbach in Germany.
The Church Organ
St Stephen's Church has a large musical instrument called an organ. This organ was first put into the church in 1869 by a company named T. C. Lewis. An organ is a complex instrument that uses pipes to make sound. Over the years, the organ has been repaired and improved many times by other companies, including Hill, Norman and Beard. You can find detailed information about this organ on the National Pipe Organ Register.
