The Church of St Teilo is an old church building located in Llanarth, Monmouthshire, Wales. It was originally built in the 15th century. Over the years, it has been updated and repaired many times. These updates happened in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. This church is considered a very important historical building, known as a Grade II* listed building. It is no longer used for church services, as it closed in 2013.

The Story of St Teilo's Church

This church is named after Saint Teilo. He was an important religious leader in the 6th century. Most of the church building we see today was built in the 15th century.

In 1847, a person named John Prichard helped to renovate the church. More work was done by Richard Creed in 1884 and 1885. He even rebuilt the top part of the church tower.

St Teilo's Church is not an active church anymore. It closed in 2013 because it cost too much money to fix. In 2023, a group called the Village Alive Trust received a grant. This money was for studying if the church could become a community center. This would give the old building a new purpose.

What the Church Looks Like

The church is built from rough sandstone. It is designed in a style called Decorated Gothic. This is a type of architecture that was popular in the Middle Ages. It often features detailed stone carvings and large windows.

Inside the church, you can find several monuments. These are like memorials for people who have passed away. One special monument is an obelisk made of white marble. An obelisk is a tall, four-sided stone pillar that tapers to a pyramid shape at its top.

This obelisk was put there to remember Elizabeth Jones. Her husband, William Jones, had it built. He was from Clytha Park. William Jones also built a unique building called Clytha Castle to honor his wife.
