St Thomas's Church, Oakwood is a Christian church in Oakwood, London, England. It is part of the Church of England. The church is located on Prince George Avenue in the London Borough of Enfield.
History of St Thomas's Church
St Thomas's is a newer church. It was started in the 1930s. This was when the area of Oakwood began to grow. Many people moved there because the Piccadilly line underground train was extended to Cockfosters.
Building the church stopped during the Second World War. It was finally finished in the 1950s. The architect who designed it was Romilly Craze. Later, a hall was added next to the church. A tall, green spire was also built on top. There is even a Guide hut on the church grounds. It is across the car park from the main building.
In late 2010, the church's spire was found to be unsafe. It had to be taken down. However, a new spire was put in its place in early 2012.
Church Life Today
St Thomas's Church holds services every Sunday. These are regular gatherings for worship and teaching.
The church follows a specific tradition within the Church of England. This is called the Conservative Evangelical tradition. It means they believe in certain ways of understanding the Bible. The church also supports complementary gender roles. This means they believe men and women have different but equally important roles. Because of this, they receive special guidance from the Bishop of Maidstone. Currently, this bishop is Rod Thomas.
From May 2017 to 2018, the church was in a period called interregnum. This means there was no main vicar leading the church. The previous vicar, Christopher Hobbs, had moved to another church. On April 16, 2018, Rich Alldritt became the new vicar. He was officially welcomed at the church. The person in charge of music at the church today is David Reavley.
