A Look Back at Oakwood's History
How Oakwood Got Its Name
The name "Oakwood" comes from Oakwood Park. This park was bought by Southgate Council in 1927. It was then opened for everyone to enjoy. Oakwood Park itself was named after a building called Oak Lodge. This lodge stood in the park grounds from the late 1800s until World War I.
The Arrival of the Tube
A big change came to Oakwood in 1933. This was when the Piccadilly line of the London Underground was extended here. The extension led to the building of the Oakwood tube station. This station is very special because it is a "Grade II* listed" building. This means it's a very important historical building.
The arrival of the tube started a building boom in Oakwood. Companies like George Reed and Laing bought a lot of land. They began to build new homes and estates. These new developments spread out along Bramley Road and towards Cockfosters.
Enfield Chase and Its Lodges
Before all the new buildings, the main structure in the area was South Lodge. This was one of four important lodges of Enfield Chase. Enfield Chase was a large royal hunting forest. South Lodge was taken down in 1935.
The other three lodges were West Lodge Park, East Lodge Nursery, and North Lodge Farm. Today, you can still find reminders of South Lodge. These include street names like South Lodge Drive and South Lodge Crescent. Boxer's Lake Open Space is also a small part of the old Chase that remains today.
