A Long History
The church you see today was mostly rebuilt in the 12th century. That's a very long time ago, even before many famous castles were built! It wasn't officially opened or "consecrated" until 1242. This special ceremony was led by a person called David de Bernham, who was the Bishop of St Andrews.
Changes Over Time
Over the centuries, St Vigeans Church has seen some changes. In the 15th century, some parts of the building were updated. However, it didn't change much after the Scottish Reformation in 1560. The Reformation was a big event in Scotland when the church changed from being Roman Catholic to Protestant.
Later, in 1871, a big project called a "restoration" took place. This means the church was carefully repaired and brought back to its best condition. A famous Scottish architect named Robert Rowand Anderson was in charge of this important work.
