History of St Winefride's Church
The Jesuits, a religious group, built St Winefride's Church in 1832. They also started St Beuno's College nearby in 1848. From this college, they helped set up other churches and missions. For example, they founded Our Lady of the Assumption Church in Rhyl in 1851. They also started churches in Denbigh in 1853 and St Asaph in 1854. Other churches they helped establish include Our Lady Help of the Christians Church in Ruthin and Our Lady of Ransom and the Holy Souls Church in Llandrindod Wells in 1907.
Around the 1930s, the church was handed over to the Diocese of Wrexham. This means it became managed by the local bishop. On August 19, 1991, St Winefride's Church was officially named a Grade II listed building. This protects it as a building of special historical interest.
In 2008, a different religious group, the Vocationist Fathers, started looking after the church. They managed the parish until April 2023. Now, the church is once again managed by priests from the local diocese, just like it was before.
