A Look Back: History of the Church
This church is part of the Church of England and is named after Saint Winwaloe. It has been standing for a very long time. Experts believe it was built around the 1400s, in the 15th century. Some parts of the church are even older, dating back to the 1200s (13th century). One of the fonts, which is a basin used for baptisms, is thought to be from the Norman period, which was even earlier!
The Churchyard Cross
In the 1800s, a small stone cross was discovered in the churchyard. It was moved away for a while but later brought back to its rightful place in the churchyard. This cross is a piece of local history.
A Church on the Big Screen
Did you know this church was once a movie set? In 1934, a wedding scene for a film called The Lady of Pendower was filmed here. To get the perfect shot, a special track about 130 feet long was built. This track allowed the camera to move smoothly as the actors left the church.
The Unique Bell Tower
St Winwaloe's Church has a very special feature: its bell tower is separate from the main church building. This is quite unusual! You can find similar detached bell towers at other churches in Cornwall, like those in Feock and Gwennap.
Bells and Their Music
The bell tower might be even older than the 15th century. It holds three medieval bells. These bells were remade in 1926 to ensure they could continue to ring clearly. The tower also has a unique system for ringing the bells, using six wooden batons that look a bit like piano keys.
Working Together: Parish Status
St Winwaloe's Church is part of a combined parish with St Corentine's Church, Cury. This means they share a priest and work together. For example, from 1905 to 1920, a priest named Rev. Sandys Wason was in charge of both churches.
