A Look Back: The Church's History

How the Church Got Its Name

This church was first named after St Winwaloe. He was an early saint. Later, its name changed to St Neot. But in the 1970s, the church went back to being called St Winwaloe's.

When Was the Church Built?

Different parts of the church were built at different times. The transept, which is a part of the church that sticks out, was built in the 13th century. That's a very long time ago! The main parts, like the nave (where people sit), the aisle (a walkway), the chancel (near the altar), and the west tower, were built later. They date from the late 15th century.

Restoration and Special Features

The church was repaired and made beautiful again in 1896. A famous architect named George Fellowes Prynne led this work. Inside the church, you can see some amazing old things. There is a Gothic font, which is a basin used for baptisms. It's probably from the 13th century. There's also a Jacobean pulpit, where sermons are given.

Mysterious Wall Paintings

On the north wall, there are three old wall paintings. They are quite faded now, but they are still very interesting. These paintings show important ideas from the past. One is called the "Tree of Deadly Sins." Another is a "Warning to Sabbath-breakers." This painting reminded people to respect Sundays. The third painting is about the "Weighing of Souls." This showed beliefs about what happens after death.

The Church Organ

The church used to have a pipe organ. It had one manual, which is like a keyboard. Today, an electric organ is used for services.
