Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Stanlake Park Wine Estate is a large place in Berkshire, England, where grapes are grown to make wine. It is near the town of Twyford.

Growing Grapes and Making Wine

Stanlake Park has about 30,000 grapevines growing across 25 acres (which is about 100,000 square meters). They grow many different kinds of grapes and make around 12 different types of wine. They also make two kinds of liqueurs, which are sweet alcoholic drinks.

The winery at Stanlake Park doesn't just make its own wine. It also helps other English vineyards turn their grapes into wine. When there's a really good harvest, the estate can process a huge amount of grapes – between 150 and 200 tons!

The vineyard first started growing grapes in 1979. It was originally called Thames Valley Vineyards.

At the heart of Stanlake Park is a beautiful old house called a country house. It was built in the 1500s, during the time of Queen Elizabeth I. This house is also known as the manor house for the area called Hinton Pipard.

The Aldworth family built the house and lived there for many years. Later, some members of this family became important people called Barons Braybrooke. They moved to another house called Billingbear House.

During the English Civil War in the 1600s, the Aldworth family supported King Charles I. In 1646, a man named Richard Aldworth from this family started a school called Reading Blue Coat School.
