Exploring Stanlake Park Wine Estate
Stanlake Park has a very long history, going back to the year 1166. It is a large estate, covering about 130 acres (53 hectares). About 10 acres (4 hectares) of this land are used for growing grapes in four different vineyards.
The estate started growing grapes in 1979 and was first called Thames Valley Vineyards. Today, Stanlake Park makes 14 different kinds of wine. They also make some wines from Italy, thanks to a winemaker named Nico Centonze. His family has a vineyard in Puglia, Italy. The winery at Stanlake Park also helps other smaller vineyards nearby make their wines.
The Historic Manor House
At the heart of Stanlake Park is a beautiful country house that was built in the 1600s. This house was once the main home, or manor house, for a family called the Aldworths. They lived there before they became known as Barons Braybrooke and moved to another house called Billingbear House.
The Aldworth family was involved in important historical events. They supported King Charles I during the English Civil War. In 1646, a member of the family, Richard Aldworth, helped start Reading Blue Coat School. There is even a special stained glass window in the house that shows the date 1626. King Charles I gave this window to the owner of the house.
