Stanley Seymour Brotman (born July 27, 1924 – died February 21, 2014) was an American federal judge. This means he was a very important person who helped make decisions in the United States court system. He was born in Vineland, New Jersey. Stanley grew up in Brotmanville, a small village nearby. His grandfather, who came from Russia, started this village.
Stanley went to Yale University but paused his studies to join the United States Army during World War II (1942-1945). After the war, he went back to Yale and earned a degree in Eastern Studies in 1947. He then studied law at Harvard Law School, finishing in 1951.
Becoming a Judge
Stanley Brotman was chosen to be a judge by President Gerald Ford. This happened on January 27, 1975. He was nominated for a special job on the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey. This court handles important legal cases in New Jersey.
The United States Senate had to approve him. They confirmed him on March 13, 1975. He officially started his job as a judge on March 14, 1975.
Later Years as a Judge
On April 23, 1990, Judge Brotman took on a "senior status." This means he could work a lighter schedule but still help with court cases. He continued to serve the court for many years. He finally retired in September 2013.
His Passing
Judge Stanley Brotman passed away on February 21, 2014. He was 89 years old. He died at a hospital in Stratford, New Jersey.
