Stapleton's Past
The area now known as Stapleton was first called Canby. In 1895, the first post office opened there.
Railroad's Arrival
Around 1905, two brothers named Hamm from Chicago, IL, convinced the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N) to build a new train line. This line connected Bay Minette to Foley. The town of Canby was right along this new railroad route.
Soon after, the town's name changed to Stapleton. This was to honor W. D. Stapleton, who helped get a train station built in the town. The railroad was very important for the local economy. Trains used to pass through Stapleton many times a day.
Roads and Growth
By 1936, roads also became important. The only paved road in Baldwin County, besides a small part in Bay Minette, was US 31. This road came from Atmore and ended in Stapleton.
Over time, train traffic slowed down. By the 1970s, only one train might pass through each day. Today, the train tracks are completely gone.
