A Look Back at Star's History

How Star Began

Star was first established in July 1900. It started as a train stop when the Gulf and Ship Island Railroad was built through the area. This railroad later became part of the Illinois Central, and now it's known as the Canadian National Railroad.

In its early days, Star was a busy place. It had a bank, a hotel, a car dealership, and many different stores. However, over time, people started to move away from rural areas like Star. They moved to bigger cities, which caused Star to become less busy and prosperous.

School Days and Sports

The community of Star also had its own school. It was supposed to open for the 1921–22 school year. However, it didn't actually open until after Christmas that year. Before the new school opened, younger students went to school at Wesleyanna Methodist Church. Older students, who were high school age, attended classes at Star Baptist Church.

Star was also known for its sports teams. They had teams for basketball, baseball, and football. The football team played from 1937 to 1941. They didn't have a team in 1942 because World War II had started. Even though they only played for a few years, Star's football team had some success. They won games against teams like Mendenhall and Magee. They also beat their rival, Florence, four out of five times they played. In 1937, the Star team even won the Middle Mississippi Class B Championship!

Star's Musical Connection

Star is mentioned in a famous song called "Mississippi Girl" by the singer Faith Hill. This is because Faith Hill grew up right here in Star.
