Faith Hill, born Audrey Faith Perry on September 21, 1967, is a famous American country singer. She has sold nearly 50 million albums around the world, making her one of the most successful country artists ever.

Her first two albums, Take Me as I Am (1993) and It Matters to Me (1995), were big hits. They quickly made her a top country music star. Later, she became even more famous with her albums Faith (1998) and Breathe (1999).

Faith featured her first international hit song, "This Kiss". Her album Breathe became one of the best-selling country albums of all time. It included popular songs like "Breathe" and "The Way You Love Me". Breathe sold millions of copies worldwide and won three Grammy Awards.

In 2001, Faith Hill sang "There You'll Be" for the Pearl Harbor movie soundtrack. This song also became a global success. It was nominated for an Academy Award and is still her best-selling song in Europe.

Her albums Cry (2002) and Fireflies (2005) also did very well. "Cry" from the first album won her another Grammy. Songs like "Mississippi Girl" and "Like We Never Loved at All" from Fireflies also earned Grammy Awards.

Faith Hill has won many awards, including five Grammy Awards and 15 Academy of Country Music Awards. Her Soul2Soul II Tour 2006 with her husband, Tim McGraw, was the highest-earning country music tour ever. In 2019, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She has been married to singer Tim McGraw since 1996, and they have sung many duets together.

Faith Hill's Early Life and Music Start

Audrey Faith Perry was born in Ridgeland, Mississippi. She was adopted as a baby and grew up in Star, Mississippi, with her adoptive parents, Edna and Ted Perry, and their two sons. Her family was very religious.

She started singing at Star Baptist Church when she was just three years old. Everyone could see that Faith had a special singing talent early on. Her first public performance was at a 4-H lunch when she was seven. In 1976, just before her ninth birthday, she saw an Elvis Presley concert that really inspired her. As a teenager, she sang with a gospel group called the Steele Family. They performed regularly at churches.

At 17, Faith formed her own band that played at local rodeos. She finished high school in 1986 and then went to Hinds Junior College for a short time. Sometimes, she would sing for prisoners at the Hinds County Jail, often choosing the song "Amazing Grace."

When she was 19, Faith left college and moved to Nashville. She wanted to become a country singer. At first, she tried out to be a backup singer for Reba McEntire but did not get the job. A few years later, in 1991, the singer who got the job instead of Faith sadly died in a plane crash with other band members.

After working odd jobs, like selling T-shirts, Faith became a secretary at a music publishing company. She also worked at a McDonald's restaurant, which she really disliked. She once said, "Fries, burgers, cash register–I did it all, I hated it."

In 1988, she married Daniel Hill, who worked in music publishing.

One day, a co-worker heard Faith singing to herself. Soon, the head of her music company encouraged her to sing demo songs for the firm. She also sang backup for songwriter Gary Burr at Nashville's Bluebird Cafe. During one of these performances, Martha Sharp, an executive from Warner Bros. Records, heard her. She was so impressed that she started the process of signing Faith to a record deal.

In 1994, Faith and Daniel Hill divorced, shortly after her first album was released.

Faith Hill's Music Career

Early Country Music Success (1993–1997)

Faith Hill's first album, Take Me as I Am, came out in 1993. It sold very well, helped by the popular song "Wild One". In 1994, Faith became the first female country singer in 30 years to have a number one song on Billboard's country charts for four weeks in a row with "Wild One." Her song "Piece of My Heart" also reached the top of the country charts that year. The album sold 3 million copies in total.

Recording Faith's second album was delayed because she needed surgery on her vocal cords. It Matters to Me finally came out in 1995 and was another hit. The main song, "It Matters to Me," became her third number-one country single. Several other songs from the album also made it into the top 10, and over 3 million copies were sold.

In spring 1996, Faith started the Spontaneous Combustion Tour with country singer Tim McGraw. Faith was engaged to someone else at the time, but she and Tim quickly fell in love. After finding out she was expecting their first child, they married on October 6, 1996. They have three daughters: Gracie Katherine (born 1997), Maggie Elizabeth (born 1998), and Audrey Caroline (born 2001). Since their marriage, Faith and Tim try not to be apart for more than three days in a row.

After It Matters to Me, Faith took a three-year break from recording. She wanted to rest from touring and start a family with Tim. During her break, she sang her first duet with her husband, "It's Your Love". This song stayed at number one for six weeks and won awards. Faith has said that when they sing it together, "it [doesn't] feel like anybody else was really watching."

Becoming a Pop Star (1998–2003)

Faith Hill returned to music in 1998 with her third album, Faith. This album showed her moving towards a more pop sound, but it still had a country feel. "This Kiss" became a number one country hit and also reached number seven on the pop charts. More than six million copies of the album were sold.

After this success, Faith quickly released Breathe in November 1999. It debuted at the top of both the country and all-genre Billboard charts. The album focused on songs about love. The title song, "Breathe", reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart. "The Way You Love Me" also made it into the top 10. The album won Faith three Grammy Awards, including Best Country Album. Breathe has sold almost 10 million copies worldwide.

The year 2000 was very busy for Faith Hill. She went on a successful tour with her husband, appeared on TV specials, and signed a deal with CoverGirl makeup. She performed at the Academy Awards and the Grammy Awards, and sang the national anthem at Super Bowl XXXIV. Faith and Tim also started their first Soul2Soul tour together.

In 2000, Faith Hill recorded "Where Are You Christmas?" for the movie Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. This song also appeared on the pop and country charts. Some people in country music wondered if she was leaving her country roots for pop. But Faith won the CMA Female Vocalist of the Year Award and said, "I love this business... and my heart is here."

In 2001, Faith recorded "There You'll Be" for the Pearl Harbor soundtrack. This song became one of her most praised songs. Because it was so popular internationally, a collection album called There You'll Be: The Best of Faith Hill was released in other countries. "There You'll Be" was nominated for a Grammy Award and an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

In 2002, Faith released her fifth studio album, Cry. This album showed her becoming more of a pop star, with fewer country sounds. Even though it debuted at number one on Billboard's pop and country album charts, its songs were played less on country radio. The album won a Grammy Award and has sold over 3.7 million copies worldwide.

A song from the album, "Baby You Belong," was used as the theme song for the movie Lilo & Stitch.

Back to Country Music (2005–2006)

In 2005, Faith Hill returned with her new country album, Fireflies. This CD also debuted at the top of the Billboard Country and all-genre album charts. This made her one of the few artists to have three albums in a row debut at number one on both charts. The first song released from the album, "Mississippi Girl", became her highest-debuting single. This song was written just for her and tells a short version of her life story.

In 2006, after a six-year break from touring, Faith and her husband Tim McGraw started their Soul2Soul II Tour 2006. This tour became the highest-earning country music tour ever, making $90 million. It was named "Major Tour of the Year," beating out other big artists.

New Music and TV (2007–2010)

In 2007, Faith began working on her first collection of greatest hits for the US, called The Hits, released on October 2. It included two new songs, "Lost" and "Red Umbrella", plus 13 other hits from her career.

Faith also sang two duets with Tim McGraw on his 2007 album Let It Go: "I Need You" and "Shotgun Rider." These songs were performed during their popular Soul2Soul II Tour. "I Need You" was nominated for two Grammy Awards in 2008.

At the start of the 2007 NFL season, Faith Hill became the singer for the opening theme song of NBC Sunday Night Football. She sang this theme until April 15, 2013.

In September 2008, Faith released her first Christmas album, Joy to the World. It received good reviews. The album included one new song, "A Baby Changes Everything", which quickly became a number one hit on the Adult Contemporary chart.

On February 1, 2009, Faith Hill performed "America the Beautiful" before Super Bowl XLIII.

Faith also sang "The Winner Takes It All" with keyboardist Benny Andersson in 2010. This was to celebrate ABBA joining the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She also sang "The Long & Winding Road" as a tribute to Paul McCartney at the White House.

Later, Faith sang "Give In to Me" for the Country Strong movie soundtrack in October 2010. Her husband, Tim McGraw, also starred in the movie. Faith also sang "Love Is The Foundation" for Coal Miner's Daughter: A Tribute To Loretta Lynn.

In February 2017, it was reported that Faith and Tim had signed a new deal with Sony Music Nashville. This meant they would release a duet album and solo recordings. Their joint album, The Rest of Our Life, was released on November 17, 2017. An exhibit celebrating their careers, called Mississippi Woman, Louisiana Man, opened at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum at the same time.

They also donated profits from their performance in New Orleans to Hurricane Katrina relief.
