Star Fairies was a popular doll toy series from the 1980s, created by the Tonka company. These dolls had unique outfits and personalities. The Star Fairies also inspired a special TV movie, made by Hanna-Barbera in 1985. This animated adventure was later released on VHS by Family Home Entertainment in 1986.

The Star Fairies TV Movie

The Star Fairies film tells the story of Sparkle (B.J. Ward), a princess Star Fairy. She lives high in the clouds at Castle WishStar. Princess Sparkle's main job is to grant wishes for children who wish upon a star.

Lately, Sparkle has been very busy because so many wishes are being made. She asks the Wishing Well (Jonathan Winters) for help. The Wishing Well tells her to go to Mount Wishmore and wish on a shooting star. She does this and gets five new fairy helpers: True Love (Jean Casem), Whisper (Noelle North), Jazz (Susan Blu), Spice (Didi Conn), and Nightsong (Ta-Tanisha).

As the story continues, the fairies meet a little girl named Hillary (Drew Barrymore). Hillary is sad but cannot think of a wish to make her happy. Hillary and the Star Fairies then go to Princess Sparkle for help. When they return to Castle WishStar, they find a problem. Princess Sparkle's magic wand has been stolen! A group of small, hairy elves and their leader, Bungle Boss, took it. They also took the Wishing Well. This sends the fairies and Hillary on an exciting journey to get the wand back.

Tonka's Star Fairy Dolls

In the early 1980s, the Tonka toy company made a special line of dolls called the Star Fairies. The first series had six different dolls. All the dolls had "Hornby (c) 1983" marked on the back of their heads. They were about 6.5 inches tall.

These dolls had heads that could turn, and arms and legs that could move. Their waists could twist, and their legs could bend. They had pointed, elf-like ears and cute pixie faces. Each fairy doll came with a purple brush, a silver star wand, and a white stand to help them stand up. Their wings were made of fabric over a flexible plastic frame. People believed these fairies could make wishes come true. All the doll boxes had the item number #7700.

Meet the Star Fairy Dolls

  • Princess Sparkle was blonde with blue eyes. She wore a light pink gown, a silver crown, and had light pink wings.
  • Whisper had dark brown hair and brown eyes. She wore a lavender gown with matching lavender wings.
  • Spice had dark red hair and green eyes. She wore a short golden yellow dress and had dark yellow wings.
  • True Love had very light blonde hair and brown eyes. She wore a short white dress with magenta and light blue wings.
  • Night Song had straight dark brown hair, brown eyes, and a brown skin tone. She wore a light blue and white dress with matching blue wings.
  • Jazz had straight blonde hair and blue eyes. She wore a unique pink and wine-colored outfit with sheer, harem-style pants and matching wine and pink wings.

A special Royal Princess Sparkle doll was also made. This deluxe version had unique holographic wings inside plastic. She came with a special star wand that let you look through it to see beautiful rainbow colors in her wings. This Princess Sparkle wore a more fancy purple, white, and silver outfit. Her crown was also different from the standard doll. She came with a brush and a white stand. Her item number was #7701.

Star Fairy Accessories

Tonka also made other fun accessories for the Star Fairies:

Magical Unicorn and Coach

  • Lavender the Magical Unicorn was a lavender-colored unicorn and pegasus. She had a silky white mane and tail, and a shiny spiral horn. Like the fairies, she had clip-on light pink and lavender wings that attached to her sides. A special Coach could also be attached to her. This allowed her to carry the fairies to the clouds and the land of WishComeTrue. Lavender came with her own hair brush. The coach was light pink with a lavender inside and wheels, highlighted with silver. Lavender was sold alone (Item #7704) and with the coach (Item #7705).

Animal Friends

The Star Fairies Animal Friends were three soft, flocked animals made of PVC. They were designed so the Star Fairies could sit on them. Their eyes had white "stars," which was a unique feature. These animals had special powers and helped the fairies with their wish-granting tasks. All their boxes had the item number #7703.

  • Dipper was a playful little gray kitten with blue eyes.
  • Lady was an elegant young light gray swan with gray eyes.
  • Jitter was a shy light beige baby bunny with orange-brown eyes.

Play Sets and Storage

  • Castle Wish Star was a play center where the fairies lived and played. This lavender castle looked like it was floating in the clouds. It had a white staircase leading to two doors. Inside, there was a cloud sleeping area, a throne for the Princess, a cloud bathtub with a privacy door, and a place to hang the fairies' extra clothes. It also included a spinning May-Pole with purple ribbons, where three dolls could be placed and spun. The item number for the castle was #7707.
  • The Wish Keeper Jewel Box was a pink box that opened up. It had a chair for a Fairy doll to sit in and look in a vanity mirror. There were drawers to keep accessories or small treasures. It also had a tiny closet for storing clothes and wings.
