History of Starrucca
How Starrucca Got Its Name
The name Starrucca has a few interesting stories. Some say it was named after the founder's horse. He rode this horse while exploring the land. Others believe the name comes from a Native American language. It might mean "where waters meet." Another idea is that it means "where dreams go to die." This comes from an older term related to a "dying star."
The Stone Arch Bridge
Starrucca was once home to a famous Stone Arch Bridge. This bridge crossed Starrucca Creek. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Sadly, the bridge was later taken down. It was removed from the list in 1986 after being demolished.
Historic Houses and Their Stories
The Major Elisha Strong House
In 2003, Dennis and Donna Corrigan won an award. The Wayne County Historical Society honored them. They restored the Major Elisha Strong House in Starrucca. Major Elisha Strong was born in 1818. He was a military major from New York. In 1852, he received a large piece of land in Pennsylvania. This land included a house built around 1800. The house was later made bigger.
Strong started a business with Guernsey Osborne. They ran the Starrucca Tannery. A tannery is a place where animal hides are made into leather. In 1862, Strong moved his family to Starrucca. He also started raising cattle and producing lumber. By 1872, he owned most of the town's land and buildings. After he passed away in 1895, his wife, Estelle Strong, owned the house until 1921.
The Barnes House
The Barnes House is another historic home. It is located on Depot Hill in Starrucca. Homer Spencer built this large wooden house in 1888. Soon after, he built a three-story grist mill. A grist mill grinds grain into flour.
In 1899, Miles Kenyon and Arthur Laribee bought the property. They took over the mill. In 1910, Stephen Decatur Barnes and his wife, Hattie, bought the mill and house. Barnes added to the mill. He also improved the nearby dam. He ran the water-powered mill until 1940. A new power source was then installed. The mill stopped working in 1986. William and Valerie Tilton bought it in 1994.
