What Statistics Sweden Does
Statistics Sweden gathers lots of different types of information. They collect facts about people, businesses, and the environment. This helps the government make good decisions. It also helps researchers and the public learn more about Sweden.
Why Statistics Are Important
Statistics are like clues that help us understand the world. For example, if we know how many people live in a city, we can plan for enough schools and hospitals. If we know how many people have jobs, we can understand the economy. Statistics Sweden makes sure these facts are correct and easy to find.
History of Statistics in Sweden
Collecting information about people in Sweden started a very long time ago. In 1686, the Church of Sweden was asked to keep records of everyone living in the country. This was one of the first times a country officially counted its population.
From Old Records to SCB
Later, in 1749, a new office was created called the Office of Tables (Tabellverket). This office continued to collect important facts. In 1858, this office changed its name to Statistics Sweden, or SCB. This is the name it still uses today.
Where SCB Works
As of 2008, Statistics Sweden had about 1,400 employees. These people work hard to collect and organize all the facts. The main offices for Statistics Sweden are in two cities: Stockholm and Örebro.
Spreading Information
Statistics Sweden also publishes a magazine called the Journal of Official Statistics. This magazine shares important findings and new ways of collecting information. It helps experts and others stay updated on official statistics.
