Before this statue, there was another memorial for Colonel Cass. However, many people thought it wasn't very good. So, in 1897, the Boston Arts Commission asked Richard E. Brooks to design a new one.

Brooks created a beautiful bronze sculpture. It was finished in 1899. The statue was officially shown to the public on September 22, 1899. This new artwork replaced the older stone memorial. Brooks even won a gold medal for his work at a big event in Paris in 1900 called the Exposition Universelle.

What the Statue Looks Like

The statue shows Colonel Cass in his Civil War uniform. His arms are folded across his chest. The bronze statue is about 8 feet tall. It stands on a base made of granite. This granite came from Red Beach, Maine.

In 1993, experts checked on the statue. This was part of a program called "Save Outdoor Sculpture!" They make sure outdoor artworks are well cared for.

Honoring a Boston Hero

The Public Garden, where the statue stands, is a historic place. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's a very important landmark. The statue of Colonel Cass is a key part of this historic garden.

In 2009, a writer named Peters F. Stevens wrote about the statue. He said that the new bronze statue truly captured Colonel Cass's look and strong presence. It received much praise. Today, the statue still stands as a tribute to a hero from Boston.
