Stavordale Priory is a very old building in Charlton Musgrove, Somerset, England. It began its life as a home for a group of monks called Augustinian canons in the 1200s. In 1538, it stopped being a monastery and was changed into a private house. Today, it is a special building protected by law, known as a Grade I listed building. This means it is a very important historic site.

Stavordale Priory: A Look Back
Stavordale Priory was first built in the 13th century. It was founded in 1243 by a member of the Lovel family. This likely happened because Henry, Lord Lovel, who died around 1199, left money for its creation.
Changes Over the Centuries
The priory had a bell tower by 1374. The church part of the priory was updated and rebuilt around 1439. A special chapel called the chantry of Jesus was finished in 1526.
During a time known as the Dissolution of the Monasteries, many monasteries in England were closed down. Stavordale Priory merged with another monastery in Taunton in 1533. After this, it was changed from a religious building into a private home.
Modern History and Owners
In 1905, the priory was repaired and made larger by an architect named Thomas Edward Collcutt. This work was done for Mr. F.G. Sage.
Today, Stavordale Priory is owned by Sir Cameron Mackintosh. He is a famous British theatrical producer. He is well-known for creating many successful musicals. The beautiful gardens at Stavordale Priory were even shown in a book called The Secret Gardeners in 2017.
